ECONOMIC DIVERSIFICATION

EVOLUTION OF AN INDUSTRY

In 2008, a company opened in Las Vegas, with what observers at the time called “an amazing 515,000 square foot facility” dedicated to data storage. Fast forward to 2025, this American company, founded by Rob Roy, known as SWITCH, now operates 11 data center buildings in Las vegas with a total  2.3 million square feet in a compound they call the their Core Campus.

Hello again, it’s Rocketman, Ken Baxter, coming to you from sunny Las Vegas, Nevada and thanks again for stopping by.

The landscape in Las Vegas has changed  since they opened their doors in 2008, and so has SWITCH. Operating exclusively in the USA, the company now operates 5 zones in the continental US. SWITCH may be the largest tech ecosystem in the world,  offering cloud services, data storage, content  and AI generation.

The massive SWITCH facility  is not just about servers—it represents a shift in Las Vegas’s economic identity from a city focused on gaming to an emerging tech and infrastructure hub.

My incredible success in the Las Vegas real estate market was accelerated by my  experience in advertising and marketing; they go hand in hand. There may be other data storage companies that are larger, namely Google, AWS, etc., but SWITCH has become a significant player in the marketplace by providing a safe, dependable service and a strong brand identity. The bold design of their instantly recognizable red cooling towers reinforces their commitment to visibility, transparency, and high design standards. Take a minute to watch the video below, this is right in our backyard.

SWITCH has made its mark on Nevada with an another Campus  in Reno, destined to be even larger. The facility alone spans 1.3 million square feet, and the campus is designed to expand to a whopping 7.2 million sq ft with up to 650 MW of power.

The Citadel Campus, has been said to feel more like a secure fortress, encircled by a 20 ft concrete wall, than an ordinary data center.  The strategic Reno location allows SWITCH to reap the benefits of Nevada’s lower taxes with close proximity to major tech centers and freedom from California’s business killing taxes and regulations.

There are many companies that have plans for Las Vegas in the near future, including the motion picture industry, the arrival of Major League Baseball and more. Las Vegas, and the State of Nevada has the tech infrastructure in place to continue diversifying our tourist economy, giving us the ability to weather economic storms.
